After speaking to a lot of interviewers and interviewees, the questions asked in an interview do vary but there are some standard questions that tend to come up at some stage of the interview process. It is very easy to pick out someone who is prepared and has done research before an interview – these interviewees normally stand out and are more likely to progress onto the next stage. Here are then question we have found pop up time after time.
What do you know about us?
The interviewer is looking to see if you have done any research on the company. This is a great chance to show off what you know about the company.
Describe your present duties & responsibilities?
Here you want to explain above and beyond what is mentioned on your CV. Your resume should highlight your relevant skills/duties to this role but elaborate on this. Why do you want this particular job?
Employers want to see the passion you have for their company and this position. They want to hear why this is the position for you and more importantly why you are the person for this position.
How would you describe yourself?
This is the best chance to speak about yourself and your qualities that aren’t on your resume. This gives you a chance to really show them who you are as a person.
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Be completely honest. When speaking about your strengths play up to one of the key skills on the job description, something you know will impress. This is also a great opportunity to turn a negative into a positive by showing how what you originally thought was a weakness actually help you on a particular aspect of a job.
In a job, what is important to you?
This is a great way to show your ambition. To explain what it is you want in a job (be it growth and progression, to be stimulated/challenged), what your goals are and how you will get there.
As well as preparing questions that you may be asked in an interview. It is important to have a few questions in your arsenal to ask at the end of the interview. This will show your interest in the company/position further, while also giving you the opportunity to ask something that may not have been covered.
Questions to ask when in an interview
- Can you tell me more about the company?
- Can you describe my area of responsibility?
- Are there any times when the company/department is busier? Seasonal peaks?
- What are my promotion prospects?
- Do you run any training schemes?
- What type of clients do you deal with?
- Will you be holding second interviews?
- Can you show me where I will be working? (Better at second/final interview)
Obviously do not ask all these questions just select a few which are relevant, and you feel comfortable asking.
