Founding Engineer
Furnace exists so any developer can harness Functions-as-a-Service across AWS, Azure and GCP without friction. As our Founding Engineer you will own the runtime, abstractions and community that turn this mission into reality. Your code will let teams ship cloud-native products in days instead of months—and prove that open-source infrastructure can be both powerful and free.
Performance Objectives
- Ship a production-ready multi-cloud FaaS runtime (AWS, Azure, GCP) that unifies deployment, observability and secrets within six months, measured by 50+ external beta users running real workloads.
- Reduce first-deploy time for a new Furnace project from hours to under 10 minutes through CLI, templates and docs that 80 % of GitHub visitors complete unassisted.
- Achieve 99.9 % function-invocation success and sub-200 ms cold-start on the three major clouds, evidenced by public status page and load tests.
- Grow the GitHub community 10× in 12 months via exemplary code, weekly releases, and at least two accepted external PRs per month.
- Stand up automated multi-cloud CI that ships daily with zero-downtime rollbacks, covering 90 % of core paths.
- Hire and onboard the next two engineers by writing the technical bar and pairing on their first production commits.
Environment & Resources
You report directly to the founder, work with a tiny London-based team, and own architecture decisions, cloud spend and open-source roadmap. Stack is TypeScript/Go, Terraform, GitHub Actions; budget covers multi-cloud accounts and OSS tooling. Early-stage, high-autonomy, equity-heavy.
Essential Qualifications
- Shipped production serverless or multi-cloud systems used by others (not just internal tools).
- Deep hands-on with at least two of AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, GCP Cloud Functions plus their IAM, networking and observability layers.
- Proven ability to design clean abstractions that hide provider differences without leaking complexity.
- Track record of growing an open-source project through code, docs and community interaction.
- Comfort operating as the technical authority in a 1–10 person company: architecture, hiring, incident response.
Role Selling Points
- Founding equity and the chance to define the technical DNA of an open-source cloud framework.
- Direct impact: every line you write is used by developers worldwide, for free.
- True multi-cloud problem space—no vendor lock-in, real abstraction challenges.
- London base with remote flexibility and founder-level decision rights from day one.
